“You know the scene in The Expanse where the Martian interrogator takes a pill before questioning, and his eyes sharpen and everything comes into focus and he can sense even the slightest micro-expression on the prisoner’s face?” I said to him. “That’s what I imagine adderall is like.” I paused, thinking a bit, then added, “Or maybe like the pill in Limitless.”He shook his head with the authority of experience. “Then, my friend, you are in for a world of disappointment.”
I really appreciate your perspective on this! As someone who was diagnosed at around age 30, and has spent ~19 years since learning about my brain, I am grateful to have access to meds. In the Fall of 2022, when I spent a month without them (due to a nationwide shortage) I wondered if maybe I'd learned enough that I wouldn't need it anymore. Not so fast. I was reminded me that caffeine is a very poor substitue that amps my adrenals to undesirable levels, with only about half the "focusing" effect. It was pretty awful.
I haven't found that the effect wears off, since I do reduce my dosages on weekends or while on vacation. But I don't totally eliminate it, or my house rapidly gets messy and out-of-control to the point where I get too frustated to know where to start. I'm starting to realize that a lot of entrepreneurs who are successful with ADHD have a support team working with them. My business isn't there (yet) but I hope I'll be able to generate the kind of revenue where that might be possible.
